Caguas is a Puerto Rican city located in the Central Mountain Range. It has San Juan as well as Trujillo Alto to its north, San Lorenzo and Gurabo to its east, Cidra, Aguas Buenas and Cayey to its west. Founded in 1775, Caguas is a twenty minutes drive (about twenty miles) south of San Juan. Ponce is about forty miles or an hour and a half away from Caguas. Caguas is known as El Valle del Turabo or Turabo Valley. It is also known as La Ciudad Criolla or The Creole City. The original name, at the time of the city’s founding, was San Sebastián del Piñal de Caguax. The city was founded in 1775 but it did not become a city until 1894. It was categorized as a valley from 1820 to 1893. Caguas is actually the largest Puerto Rican valley. The same valley, Valle de Caguas, is shared by Aguas Buenas and Gurabo. Caguas offers quick access to the Humacao coast line and the coast of San Juan. Caguas has several water features which are also a major draw among tourists. It is home to the Río Grande de Loíza which also serves as the border of the city with Gurabo. There are five rivers flowing across or through Caguas – Rio Caguitas, Rio Turabo, Rio Bairoa, Rio Canaboncito and Rio Canas. The barrios of Caguas are Caguas Pueblo, Bairoa -El Mirador de Bairoa, Beatriz, Borinquen, Cañabón, Cañaboncito, Rio Cañas, San Antonio, San Salvador, Tomás de Castro and Turabo.
The major tourist attractions at Caguas are Town Square, Botanical and Cultural Gardens, Caguas Historical Museum, Caguas Cathedral, Coquí Villa, Hacienda Catalina Ruins, Hacienda Cofresí, Hacienda Country Club, Jardín Botánico, La Casa de Ajedrez (The House of Chess), Tobacco Museum and Cathredal Dulce Nombre De Jesus. The notable festivals or events in Caguas are the Rosario Cantado a los Reyes, Three Kings Festival, Criolla Beatriz, Criolla Borinquen Fair, Criolla Cañabón Fair, Felipe \”La Voz Rodríguez\’ Birthday, Al Fresco, Cross Festival, Typical Criole Festival and Latin American Musical.
