Ceiba – La Cuidad del Marlin – is a small municipality that resides in northeastern Puerto Rico, named after the famous Ceiba tree. The town gained its name after being founded during April 1838 by Luis de la Cruz; the name was derived from the Indian word seyba, the name of the famous tree that grows throughout the island.
The cozy municipality is nestled right on the north coast of the island, the east side, bordering much of the Atlantic Ocean and lying east of the Rio Grande. It also lies north of Naguabo and south of Fajardo. Ceiba is easy to reach from San Juan, about an hour away from the popular tourist destination.
The cozy town originally served as a home to an American military air base, known as the Roosevelt Roads Naval Station, which closed down in 2004 after much of the units relocated to other bases. Although initially met with skepticism, the air base was eventually converted into an airport by 2008, becoming the Jose Aponte de la Torre Airport.
There’s plenty to take in at cozy Ceiba. The town is home to various landmarks, otherwise places of interest, including the now closed and converted Roosevelt Roads Base. Other places of interest include the beautiful Los Machos and Medio Mundo beaches and the Ceiba Historic Mural.
Annual festivals and events include the Fiesta Nacional de la Raza (October), Marathon Del Pavo (November) and the Encendido Navideño Men (December).
