Dorado is a small municipality in northern Puerto Rico. It is about fifteen miles west of the city of San Juan. Dorado is marked by Toa Alta to its south, Toa Baja to its east and Vega Alta to its west. Dorado offers as many as five championship golf courses and they are quite famous not just in Puerto Rico but internationally. The city has a long history as a resort town since in the early 1900s the Rockefeller family had started work on what would appear to be a Caribbean Shangri-la. It wasn’t until the midcentury when the entire region’s first hotel was opened up. The Dorado Beach was an eco-resort, one that was way ahead of its time and was certainly geared towards environmentalism. While the same spirit has not been held up through the later years of the century, Dorado remains to be one of the less polluted tourism hubs in the world.
For tourists, while in Dorado one should not miss the the Dorado Beach Resort (which is now the Ritz-Carlton Reserve & Plantation), the Hyatt Hacienda del Mar and the Embassy Suites in the neighborhood of Dorado Del Mar. Some other places to visit should be the Museum Casa del Rey, Distinguished Doradeños Plaza and Juan Boria Theater. Among the beaches, one should visit the Sardinera, Kikita and El Unico. The Ojo del Buey Park is also a must visit for all and sundry.
