Hato Rey derives its name from the king’s cattle farm which is known as hato. The town comprising of three wards used to be northwest part of Rio Piedras, an area which was characterized by sugar cane fields and cattle. That dates back to the eighteenth century. Today, Hato Rey enjoys proximity to Miramar, San Juan and erstwhile barrios of Rio Piedras. This location makes Hato Rey significant in the San Juan Metropolitan Area.
While Hato Rey is not known for any luxurious boulevard or swanky destinations, it does serve as the hub for many international and local banks as well as the headquarters of various companies that are significant to the economy of Puerto Rico.

The José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum is a major attraction in the town and Tren Urbano or Urban Train offers convenient access to and from the wards. Hato Rey serves as the headquarters of Banco Popular, Plaza Las Américas, Avianca and the Roberto Clemente Coliseum. The FBI headquarters of Puerto Rico is also at Hato Rey. The town also had offices of Compaq until recently.
